Troye Sivan has released the official video for Angel Baby, his first single of 2021, which we are happy to share as our video of the week.
Directed by Luke Gilford, who also shot the video for Sivan's song "Heaven" in 2017, the video, shot in New York City, shows Sivan with a multitude of angel babies, which really increases the romantic mood.
Angel Baby was quite a commercial hit for the singer: it has accumulated over 31 million combined global streams since it was released in September.
Rolling Stone praised the "romantic ode," while NME hailed it as "the soaring, slow-burning ballad in which Sivan sang cinematic synthesizers over a lush bed." Meanwhile, The Honey POP said, "It's uncompromisingly romantic, with a touch of nostalgic, retro-cinematic synth fame from the '90s …" Angel Baby "already gives us Blue Neighborhood 2.0 vibes."
In the song, Sivan confesses to his lover that he saved him: "You came out of the blue on a rainy night, no lie / I tell you how I almost died / While you bring me back to life," he sings emotionally the chorus and continued, "I just want to live in this moment forever."
"Angel Baby" was Sivan's first new music since the acclaimed 2020 EP In A Dream. It featured hits like "Easy" and "Rager Teenager!" And featured collaborations with greats like Kacey Musgraves and Mark Ronson. A Dream landed at number three on the ARIA album charts.
"Angel Baby" is the first single from Sivan's upcoming third album, although there is no official release date for this album yet. It will be the long-awaited 2018 sequel to Bloom, named one of the best albums of the year by Rolling Stone, The Guardian, TIME and Billboard.
