The Weeknd has reached out to Twitter to criticize the Grammy Awards for corruption after his name was particularly missing from the list of 2021 nominees.
The Weeknd – real name Abel Tesfaye – didn't get a single nomination, despite the fact that he released his critically acclaimed album After Hours and the chart-dominating single "Blinding Lights". The latter broke the record for most weeks on Billboard & # 39; s Radio Songs airplay chart.
Tesfaye went on Twitter to condemn the ceremony and simply wrote, "The Grammys remain corrupt," he wrote. "You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency …"
There are a number of theories as to why The Weeknd wasn't nominated. As Variety reports, there is no way the music label Republic Records didn't nominate him. This theory has been written off as unlikely as the Republic nominated other acts on its list, such as Taylor Swift.
It has also been suggested that the chameleon-like nature of The Weeknd's music – whether he's in the pop or R&B field – split the vote in committee, resulting in no nominations.
TMZ came up with a creepier theory. The publication claims that The Weeknd was recently given an ultimatum in which he had to choose between appearing at the ceremony or appearing at the Superbowl Half Time Show in 2021. We take this with a grain of salt, but we also don't get beyond the entertainment industry to do something so petty.
It's bizarre that The Grammy & # 39; s The Weeknd would be struck off the nominee list, considering he's received ten nods and won three awards over the course of his career.
At least he can calm himself down when he knows he's got the line "She likes my futuristic sounds in the new spaceship / Futuristic sex gives her Philip K. cock." Wrote. Maybe not the king of a pony award, but he remains the king of my heart.
