Marshmello, David Guetta, Alan Walker, Calvin Harris, and The Chainsmokers are the top 5 most popular electronic artists according to Viberate.
DJ Mag has just announced the winners of their annual Top 100 DJ survey, in which David Guetta once again takes the crown for number 1 in the world. 1 DJ. Regardless of the vote, music research and analytics platform Viberate has examined the online popularity data of electronic artists to see if and how the results match.
Why data? In a sense, it is the "objective referendum". Fans around the world reward their favorite artists daily by streaming their music, watching their videos, liking their social media posts, and buying their tracks – besides casting their votes in online polls.
Viberate's advanced algorithms take into account every artist's social media and music channels, as well as year-round radio airplay. This enables an unbiased and transparent overview of how popular an artist really is.
The most important findings include:
Marshmello, David Guetta, Alan Walker, Calvin Harris, and The chain smokers are the top 5 most popular electronic artists of the past 12 months. The top 10 list is rounded off by Martin Garrix, Tiësto, Skrillex, DJ Snake, and Alok. Interestingly, the usual “crowd favorites” such as Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Afrojack and Armin van Buuren did not make it into the top 10 list.
Dance is the most popular genre. 72% of the top 100 artists are dance (EDM) artists, 10% are house artists and other genres are less represented.
Several artists took a giant leap in 2021 and entered the top 100 charts. These include Imanbek (49.), Moth and Riton (43rd or 47th), A7S (35.) and topic (32nd).
Collaborations are the way to go. Thanks to the success of tracks like “Friday” (Nightcrawlers & Riton), “Your Love” (A7S & Topic) and “Breaking Me” (A7S & Topic), the aforementioned artists jumped up to 800 places in the artist chart.
Memes work too. South African artist The kiffness 96th place thanks to his musical performances of “vibing cat”, “alugalug cat” and sea shanties that delighted the audience during the Covid-19 lockdown. The track "Alugalug Cat" alone was streamed over 60,000 times on Spotify last week.
