Steve Aoki has revealed a brand new side project, a techno music alias called Ninja Attack.

The move shouldn't come as a surprise. Underground house and techno music has seen a mainstream resurgence lately, and if there's anyone who can capitalize on this trend, it's Aoki. The reputation of the dance music veteran has long been based on its detachment from genre boundaries.

The debut of Ninja Attack is called "Aurora". The track is dark and minimalist, and while it certainly won't impress the traditionalists of the techno community, it's a solid foray into the genre. Aoki was smart about keeping production down here so as not to completely alienate his fan base. The kick drums smack their lips with an industrial bang, but the sound design lacks the insane acid-inspired bass from techno heavyweights like Charlotte de Witte and Alan Fitzpatrick.

"Aurora" is a joint release between Aokis Dim Mak-Imprint and MDLBEAST Records, the music distribution arm of entertainment company MDLBEAST in the Middle East. The brand recently announced SOUNDSTORM, Saudi Arabia's largest music festival, as well as the region's first dedicated music summit, called XP.

The SOUNDSTORM 2021 edition, planned for December 16-19, promises performances by Martin Garrix, deadmau5 Tiësto, The Chainsmokers and deadmau5 and The Chainsmokers, among others. Tickets are on sale now.
