Oolacileis new Halcyon Imprint was conceived with the idea of crossing borders and driving the sound of bass music into the future. So it is no coincidence that one of the most fascinating producers of bass music Phononwas part of the label from the start.

After his divisive but undoubtedly fresh offer "Polyriddim", Phonon set his goal even higher with "Kegelschnitte", his Halcyon debut. Hailed by Oolacile itself as the "Dream Theater of Dubstep", Phonon has returned to Halcyon with a brand new, wild offer that is sure to make even more noise.

There are no clear or concise ways to describe "emme", Phonon's latest single. It's a seven-minute journey through genres and soundscapes, and it would probably take more than seven minutes to find a single label for the genre the track actually falls under.

But who needs genres? "emme" is a technical master of the young and incredibly experienced phonon, who impresses with elements of future bass, jazz fusion, funk and more during the long running time of the track. You might be better lucky to find out all the different time signatures in a Between the buried and me Song than in "emme" because the constantly evolving track turns almost every imaginable corner.

"emme" surpasses the expectations – which were already high – with its jazzy charm, the scat elements, the cleverly cut breakbeats and the playful sound design. However, Phonon's technical mastery is the highlight here. It is uncertain whether it would benefit from looking at the track's layout in a DAW to find out everything, or whether this project file is actually what was in the ark and the face of Major Arnold Toht in Raiders of melted the Lost Ark.

The latest from phonon is clearly the most interesting bass music offering for 2020, and the producer has highlighted the impressive track he has already left in the genre with "emme". As each section of the track progresses there is absolutely no telling where it will lead next, which perfectly sums up the essence of the Phonon sound.

"emme" is available now from Halcyon and can be found here.
